Meta Pixel: Improved InitiateCheckout Accuracy & Enhanced AddPaymentInfo Data
InitiateCheckout: Enhanced Functionality
InitiateCheckout now activates when a buyer reaches the checkout page, rather than when they submit payment. AddPaymentInfo now also sends comprehensive order and customer details to Meta. These improvements provide a more accurate snapshot of checkout drop-off and offer Meta better insights to optimise your campaigns.
This update is relevant to funnels, websites, and stores with the Meta Pixel integrated and the InitiateCheckout event enabled.
- When the page loads on store checkout pages.
- When the page loads on any page where you added InitiateCheckout at the page level.
- On the buyer’s first click, tap, or keystroke in an order form elsewhere. This covers one-step, two-step, and popup order forms, as well as the new order form.
- Page-level Control: Adding InitiateCheckout at the page level triggers it as soon as that page loads. Placing it at the funnel, website, or webinar level activates it upon the buyer’s initial interaction with the order form.
- Protection against Duplicates and False Triggers: InitiateCheckout now fires at most once per page visit, even if a page has multiple order forms or more than one trigger is configured. Browser autofill, password managers, and fields focused automatically on load do not trigger it.
- Abandoned-Cart Recovery Support: If a buyer returns through an abandoned-cart link, the event waits for their saved cart to load, including the cart value and products.
- Express Wallet Coverage: Buyers who go directly to Apple Pay etc., without interacting with the form, are still counted. For them, InitiateCheckout activates when payment commences.
- Enhanced AddPaymentInfo Data: AddPaymentInfo now includes order value, currency, product IDs, and hashed customer details (email, phone, name, external ID) where available.
- Insight into Checkout Drop-Off: Previously, InitiateCheckout and AddPaymentInfo counted the same buyers, resulting in no data between “started checkout” and “entered payment”. Now, you can view how many buyers reach checkout but leave before completing the purchase.
- Improved Ad Optimisation: Meta can now optimize and create audiences based on buyers displaying checkout intent, even those who do not finalise the purchase.
- Higher Event Match Quality: Detailed order and customer information in AddPaymentInfo aids Meta in matching more events to actual individuals, enhancing attribution and targeting.
- Consistent, Reliable Data: Every event now reports the same currency for an order, and invalid or blank values are not transmitted to Meta.
- Expect an Increase in InitiateCheckout Counts: This is normal as the event now includes buyers who reach checkout but do not proceed with the payment. The gap between InitiateCheckout and AddPaymentInfo/Purchase now reflects actual checkout drop-off. Consider this when comparing reports, automated rules, or cost-per-InitiateCheckout before and after this update.
- Page-Level Settings Update Delay: Changes may take up to 24 hours to be effective on already published pages. To implement them immediately, edit and save the page.
- No Changes to Consent or Conversions API: Events continue to uphold your cookie-consent preferences. When the Conversions API is active, browser and server events are still sent together and de-duplicated in Events Manager.
- No Action Required: The update is automatic.
