Instagram DM Datasets + CTD CAPI in Workflows

👀 What’s New?

  • You can now create Instagram DM datasets in Ad Manager Settings > Meta > Conversions > Create new dataset > Goal Type: Instagram DM (alongside Lead Event & Funnel Event).
  • In Workflows, the action formerly called Facebook Conversion API is now Meta Conversion API.
  • The action includes Event Type = Instagram DM and updates required fields for CTD (Click-to-Direct) messaging attribution:
    • Connection Type: Integration or Ad Manager
    • Facebook Page selector
    • Instagram Account selector (accounts linked to the chosen Page)
    • Dataset ID (formerly “Pixel ID”; shows dataset names when Connection Type = Ad Manager)
    • Facebook Event Name (defaults to LeadSubmitted)
    • Optional Value and Currency
    • Custom Mapping toggle with IGSID support for DM events

👷 How It Works

  • Create the dataset: In Ad Manager settings, navigate to Meta > Conversions > Create new dataset > Goal Type: Instagram DM. This creates tracking datasets for Instagram DM events, recording a conversion whenever someone interacts with the click-to-direct ad on Instagram.
    Create the dataset
  • Build your automation: In a Workflow, add Meta Conversion API as the action after selecting the appropriate trigger > choose Ad Manager (or Integration) > set Event Type = Instagram DM.
    Build your automation
  • Select assets: Choose the Facebook Page and the linked Instagram Account for the ad’s Page.
    Select assets
  • Attach the dataset: Choose the Dataset ID (the list shows the dataset name you created).
  • Map details: Keep LeadSubmitted or select the preferred event name, optionally send Value/Currency, and if needed, enable Custom Mapping to pass IGSID for stronger attribution.
  • Publish: When a user starts a DM from your CTD ad, the Workflow sends the CAPI event to Meta using your IG DM dataset.

🌟 Why It Matters

  1. Closes attribution gaps for Instagram Click-to-Direct campaigns.
  2. Captures conversations as events and sends them via CAPI, improving reporting, optimisation, and ROAS measurement.
  3. Maintains dataset management within Ad Manager while leveraging automations you already use.

📝 Notes

  1. To ensure effective operation, users must reconnect their Meta account under integration and re-authorise, as CTD CAPI requires new OAuth scopes.
  2. UI changes in Workflows:
    • Action renamed to Meta Conversion API.
    • Pixel ID changed to Dataset ID (shows dataset names when Connection Type = Ad Manager).
    • Instagram DM added to Event Type.

Helpful messages:

  • If no Page is connected: “No Facebook page connected; connect under the Integrations settings of the sub-account.
  • If the selected Page has no IG account: “No Instagram account associated with the selected page. Learn more” (guide available via click on Learn More: How to connect Instagram account with Facebook page).
